The predicted amino acid sequence of mouse ST8Sia-III (mST8Sia-III) shows a protein of 380 amino acids with a type II transmembrane topology, as has been found for all sialyltransferases cloned to date. The sequence shows 16.9, 26.1, 26.2, and 17.2% identity with those of mST8Sia-I, -II, -IV, and -V, respectively. The mST8Sia-III transfers sialic acids toward Siaα2-3Galβ1-4GlcNAc sequences on both N-linked oli- gosaccharides of glycoproteins and α2-3sialylated glycosphingolipids, such as α2,3-sialylparagloboside and GM3. The mST8Sia-III gene was expressed only in brain and testis, and was well regulated during brain development.
