The cutaneous innervation includes unmyelinated efferent sympathetic nerves that supply arterioles, eccrine glands, apocrine glands, and hair erector muscles, and mostly myelinated somatic sensory nerves that supply specialized end-organs (e.g., Meissner corpuscles and Pacini corpuscles), Merkel cells, hair follicles, and free dermal nerve endings (Jakubovic and Ackerman 1985).
