Abstract

The term ‘supernova’ was first introduced in 1930’s by Baade and Zwicky [1,2] to distinguish the newly recognized extremely luminous nova from the ordinary ones. They are so bright that they are seen even if they occur in other galaxies. In some cases, their maximum absolute magnitude becomes about — 19mag, 1010 times more luminous than the Sun and 104 times than ordinary novae. The time scale of darkening is several months. While about 700 supernovae were observed up to 1990 [3,4] , the latest supernovae observed in our Galaxy were the two in the 17th century (Kepler’s supernova and the one which left a remnant known as Cassiopeia A) and several other supernovae were recorded before them. Especially the remnant of the supernova in 1054 is now observed as the Crab nebula which contains the Crab pulsar. The nearest supernova observed in this century is SN 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
