Taiwanese Technology Transfer to China: The Automobile Industry as a Case Study

In 1953, the first Chinese automobile plant was opened. From this time to the early 1980’s, trucks were heavily manufactured and very few buses and passenger cars were manufactured. For example, as shown in Table 13-1, in 1983, 57.15% of vehicles produced were trucks, and the percentage of buses was only 2.6% while the percentage of passenger cars was a mere 2.5%. The reason is that military and infrastructure needs were emphasized in this period.
