An Overview of an Interactive and Personalized Multimedia Tele-Education Environment over a Gigabit Network

Abstract

With the rapid progress of information technologies in network and multimedia fields, to build an virtual educational environment over high-speed net­work becomes possible and is strongly requested. Many efforts have been made for development of virtual educational environments and/or virtual universities. However, there is still a lack of a practical virtual educational environment, which supports educational activities with high degree of interactive and personalized teaching and learning.

Our goal is to develop an interactive and personalized tele-education environ­ment, by applying the state-of-the-art technologies in high-speed network, multi­media delivery, and intelligent software agent. The tele-education mainly contain four sub-environments which are Tele-Lecture Classroom, Tele-Exercise Classroom, Tele-Self-Learning Classroom, Tele-Group Learning Classroom, which are equipped with a set of toolkits developed based on existing techniques and new established techniques. Our principle is to mix real physical classrooms and virtual online class­rooms, in which high degree of interactive and personalized educational activities can be performed. By interactive, we mainly mean: (1) A teacher can instruct and discuss with a learner in a tele-class, in real-time. (2) A teacher can catch the under­standing states and requests of a tele-class of learners, quickly, and respond to the requests as many as possible, with the support of provided tools. By personalized, we mainly mean: (1) A learner can ask his/her own interested question, and get responses. (2) The course contents and teaching/learning methods are provided in accordance with every learner’s situation as much as possible.

In this paper, we present an overview of the environment, and discuss the re­quired tools and techniques to build such environment. The detailed design and implementation of the environment will be described in other papers.
