Abstract
As a definition of a surface, Definition 2.3.1 is not entirely satisfactory, because it does not cover many objects that we would naturally like to call surfaces, such as a sphere. Indeed, there are three common ways in which objects that we consider surfaces in ℝ3 can arise:
