Sub-Quantum-Limit Electron Interferometers

We propose a scheme for surpassing the standard quantum limit (SQL) of phase sensitivity in electron interferometry. A nonlinear interferometer with Coulomb coupling between two arms is shown to generate phase-correlated electron states. The minimum detectable phase is improved from the SQL (total electron number)−1/2 to (total electron number)−5/6 by replacing an input linear coupler of a phase-sensing interferometer with the nonlinear interferometer. A possible experimental scheme in a mesoscopic system is discussed.
