Abstract

The effects of the steroidal muscle relaxants vecuronium, rocuronium and Org 9487, and some of their metabolites have been investigated on the in vitro chick biventer cervicis muscle preparation. Muscles were removed from 4–10 day old chicks (Ginsborg & Warriner, 1961), mounted in 10 ml tissue baths in Krebs-Henseleit solution (32°C, pH 7.3) and bubbled with oxygen containing 5 % CO2. Twitches were evoked at 0.1 Hz with pulses of 0.1 ms duration and supramaximal voltage. After administration of a concentration of drug giving between 70–90 % block, the drug was allowed to remain in contact with the tissue for 90 minutes.
