Abstract

Five major candidate mechanisms have been proposed as possible routes by which hypothermia can be neuroprotective: blockage of calcium entry, prevention of glutamate release, suppression of cytokine activation and release, suppression of nitric oxide synthase activity, suppression of apoptosis, and DNA fragmentation. It was widely agreed by the discussants that hypothermia probably affects numerous different mechanisms and may do this at different times during the recovery process.
