Plastic Extrusion of YBa2Cu3O7-y-Ag Composite Superconducting Wires using Pyrophoric Synthetic Powder

Abstract

YBa2Cu3O7-y (123) and YBa2Cu3O7-y-Ag composite superconducting wires were fabricated by plastic extrusion method using pyrophoric synthetic powder. As the pyrophoric synthetic powder was used as a precursor material, fine size 123-Ag composite powder was obtained in a short reaction time. The added Ag2O was converted to metallic Ag during pyrophoric reaction and it accelerated both the formation and the grain growth of the 123 phase via the enhanced mass transfer. Superconducting properties and the fabrication parameters of the composite wires are reported.
