Genetic analysis of complex traits using clonal rainbow trout lines

  • Chapter
Aquatic Genomics

Summary

This paper describes the derivation and characterization of five homozgyous clonal rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) lines by androgenesis and gynogenesis at Washington State University (WSU). The lines represent diverse genetic backgrounds including three hatchery (Shasta-type) strains, one Alaskan rainbow source and one Idaho steelhead source. Four are YY male lines and one is an XX female line. The lines have also been characterized based on differences in karyotype The Alaskan line shows more rapid embryonic development than the Shasta lines. Differences among the lines are also evident in nonspecific cytotoxic cell response. Doubled haploid progeny have been produced by androgenesis from hybrids between the lines to facilitate genetic mapping, primarily using AFLP markers, and quantitative trait locus analysis. This set of lines and the doubled haploid approach appear to have considerable potential for allowing genetic analysis of complex traits in rainbow trout.
