Exploiting Transgenic Tilapia and the Tilapia Genome

  • Chapter
Aquatic Genomics

Summary

The future importance of aquaculture is clearly very great because of the increased demand for fish and the decline of world capture fisheries. Tilapia fish are widely cultured in both the developed and developing world countries, and any methods for improving tilapia performance in aquaculture are of significance.

In this review the application of the transgenic technology to Oreochromis niloticus is considered in terms of both methodology and the possible gains of growth enhancement, reversible sterility, and using tilapia as biofactories for production of valuable pharmaceuticals. The use of transgenesis for studies in gene regulation in tilapia is also discussed.
