Redox Properties of Hydroxyphenyl Nitronyl Nitroxide

Abstract

Hydroxyphenyl nitronyl nitroxide, a cross-conjugated biradical, was prepared by the lead dioxide oxidation of p-hydroxyphenyl nitronyl nitroxide, and was characterized by ESR spectroscopy. The anodic or chemical oxidation did not generate the biraidcal but lead to the formation of the hydroxyphenyl substituted nitronyl nitroxide cation. Thus, a stable acid/base pair with different spin multiplicities could be prepared separately.
