π-π Charge-Transfer Interaction of the Tetracyanoethylene π-Dianion Generated at Sequential Electroreduction Steps

Abstract

Increased attention has been paid to the π-dianions of organic molecules generated at sequential electroreduction steps, as a noticeably active electron-donor. The π-π stacking interaction of the dianion plays an important role in organic chemistry and biochemistry. In a series of our works the analyzing methods on the interaction of active species generated in electrode process has been proposed, and n-σ type charge-transfer interaction of the organic π-dianion has also been discussed.1) In this paper, the π-π complexes of tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) π-dianion with hexamethylbenzene (HMB) and biphenylene (BP) were investigated with the aid of electrochemical techniques and molecular orbital calculations in order to clarify the π-π type charge-transfer interaction of the organic π-dianions.
