Catalytic Reduction of Halogenated Organic Compounds with Electrogenerated Metal(I) Salen Complexes

Abstract

Cobalt(I) salen, electrogenerated at a carbon cathode in dimethylformamide or acetonitrile containing a tetraalkylammonium salt, can be employed to effect the catalytic reductions of iodoethane and 3-chloro-2,4-pentanedione. To elucidate the mechanistic features of these processes, we have used cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential electrolysis, along with product identification and quantitation.
