An Application of Strut Bone Graft in the Surgical Treatment for Kienböck’s Disease

Abstract

A new surgical option (strut bone graft), based on the results of morphological observation and a biomechanical experiment on the lunate, was tried on ten patients in the relatively early stages of Kienböck’s disease in which no significant bone collapse had been observed on X-rays. The surgical method consists of thorough curetting of the necrotized portion of the affected lunate followed by tight insertion of a columnar-shaped bone graft into the cavity resulting from the curettage.

Significant improvement of the preoperative clinical symptoms without further bone collapse as seen on X-rays was obtained in nine patients.
