Aortopathy

Abstract

Exposure of estrogen and hemodynamic changes during pregnancy lead to the fragility of the elastic fiber of the aortic media. It elevates the risk for aortic dilatation and dissection. We observe cystic medial necrosis change in the aortic wall media during pregnancy, and the diameter of the aorta increases slightly. This phenomenon generally called aortopathy is especially important in the management of connective tissue diseases such as Marfan syndrome patients during pregnancy.

A large sinus of Valsalva, increased aortic size index, and rapid growth of the sinus of Valsalva are risk factors for aortic dilatation or dissection in pregnant women with Marfan syndrome.
