Abstract

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are ~22-nucleotide single-stranded small noncoding RNAs that are highly conserved among eukaryotes. miRNAs play a central role in the posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression by inhibiting translation and/or by inducing mRNA degradation. Several recent studies have shown that miRNAs contribute to diverse physiological processes, including pathogenesis, through their role in gene suppression. In this chapter, we review the relationship between miRNAs and chronic inflammatory diseases, such as cancer and arthritis, and discuss the potential functions of miRNAs in chronic inflammation.
