Abstract

Endoscopy is essential for the diagnosis and management of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. Endoscopic procedures are used to make the initial diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), distinguish Crohn’s disease from ulcerative colitis, evaluate disease extent and disease activity, assess response to therapy, survey for dysplasia, and provide endoscopic treatment. This review focuses on the purpose of different endoscopic procedures including upper and lower endoscopy, and capsule endoscopy as well as balloon enteroscopy in the evaluation and management of patients with IBD in the United States.
