Abstract

The interaction of pions is strongly related to the neutrino oscillation measurement in T2K, because the pions are often produced in the neutrino interactions, and also because the pion–nucleus interaction cross section is large. The uncertainty in the pion–nucleus cross section results in the uncertainty in the neutrino oscillation parameter measurement. However, the uncertainty of pion–nucleus cross section measured by the past experiments is large. Therefore, we performed a measurement of pion interactions at pion beamline at TRIUMF. A fine-grained scintillation fiber detector is newly developed for this measurement. In this chapter, we describe the overview of this measurement and the detail of the experimental apparatus.
