Long Noncoding RNA Functions as a Regulator for Steroid Hormone Receptor-Related Breast and Prostate Cancers

  • Chapter
Long Noncoding RNAs

Abstract

Steroid hormone receptors have essential roles in various biological processes, including pathogenesis, invasion, and metastatic behavior of breast and prostate cancer. The precise and dynamic regulation of steroid hormone receptors, members of the nuclear receptor (NR) gene family, remains an essential, evolving question. Here we summarize several recent studies that have uncovered the roles of a new layer of NR regulators, long noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs). We present representative examples to demonstrate the diverse roles of ncRNAs, including long ncRNAs (lncRNAs) and enhancer RNAs (eRNAs), in the context of the NR functional network, focusing on the molecular mechanism, biological significance, and clinical relevance of these lncRNA regulators. Several breast/prostate cancer-associated lncRNA regulators not yet directly linked to NRs are also included in this chapter.
