Abstract
In October 1987 I received an unexpected telephone call from the Tokyo Institute of Technology. “We would like to invite you to join the institute as a full professor because we are establishing a new department of biology. You are our choice of professor and we would be very happy if you would accept the invitation and set up a new academic unit for extremophiles. The department will open at the beginning of April 1988.” I asked for a month to make up my mind.
