Abstract

This chapter concentrates on the different safe water options that are available for the arsenic affected people – deep tube wells, dug (shallow) wells/ring wells, treatment of tube well water, treatment of surface water, and rainwater harvesting. Taking into account performances of the different options based on different criteria – e.g., cost, capacity in terms of households served, satisfaction of WHO/Bangladesh standard for arsenic, WHO/Bangladesh standard for bacteria, whether produces toxic sludge or not, whether safe for retention of ground-water, socially acceptable or not, whether easily operable or not, geographically feasible or not, the author analyzes pros and cons of each of the available options.
