Abstract
At 14:46 on March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake—the largest ever recorded in Japan—struck the Tohoku Region. The epicenter was 24 km under the sea off the east coast of Honshu at 38.1° North latitude, 142.9° East longitude. Seismic faults were activated in a vast area stretching 500 km north–south from the coast off Iwate Prefecture to Ibaragi Prefecture and 200 km east–west. The tsunami triggered by the earthquake caused immense destruction up along the Sanriku coastline, and the number of dead or missing reached approximately 20,000. In addition to this, a nuclear power plant (Fukushima Dai-Ichi), the showpiece of Japan’s energy policy, was destroyed and damage caused that will require remedial action for decades if not more.
