Abstract

When two electric charges are separated by a grounded metal sheet, there is no force between the two electric charges. On the other hand, when the two electric charges are separated by a paper or wood, although the force may be weakened slightly, it does not reduce to zero. This shows that the effect of electric charge, i.e., the electric field, penetrates the paper or wood. Such material is called a dielectric material or insulator.
