Abstract
Since the emergence of electronic medical records (EMRs) several implementations have been faced with problems such as technical issues, high implementation costs and usability issues. In the case of specialized medicine, healthcare institutions are finding out that the one-size-fits-all approach to EMR deployment does not work. In the field of pediatrics, studies show that general EMRs have limited usefulness in pediatrics because they are generally designed for adult care.
In previous years, several EMRs, Ped-Files, PEDiA and PedSync included, have been developed with the aim of providing an EMR designed to address the specialized needs of pediatrics, which conforms to the standards set by the Philippine Pediatric Society. However these EMRs have encountered problems with database management and synchronization issues.
With the aim of addressing the issues encountered, PedInfoSys, an OpenMRS-based Pediatric Information System, was developed. It is a web-based medical records system built on OpenMRS, which is an open source EMR application that provides the ‘building block’ to the creation of customized EMRs. The use of OpenMRS has provided advantages over previous systems like PEDiA and PedSync. These include the elimination of complications presented by having different databases, the ease of database communication through simple calls, the restriction of invalid data to maintain data integrity and the use of standards like HL7 to promote reusability and interoperability. More importantly, it has a highly scalable model and uses an approach that allows ease of use and flexibility with regards to the users’ needs.
This paper aims to present the system design modifications to create PedInfoSys, and its capabilities in addressing the shortcomings of previous systems. It also analyzes the issues encountered with the implementation of the application and presents recommendations regarding future improvements.
