Abstract
In this chapter, we will review the fundamentals of QCD, with a particular focus on the symmetries of the theory. The discussed topics include asymptotic freedom, gauge invariance, chiral symmetry and its realization in the QCD vacuum, and the properties of QCD in a hot or dense medium, which are concepts that will frequently appear in the remainder of this thesis.
