Peyer’s patches are an important part of the intestinal immune system and are involved in the uptake and presentation of antigens. Individual lymph nodes first appear in the jejunum, and in the ileum the lymphoid tissue increases, forming 20–30 Peyer’s patches within the mucosa along or opposite the line of mesenteric attachment. Each Peyer’s patch comprises approximately 20 lymph nodules.
