Abstract

As described in previous chapters, large amounts of information on spatial and temporal variations in the earth system are available. Therefore, people today can view nature on a global scale. They have information about the earth and can envision it as a system. People’s images of the earth system vary by individual person, region, and country. It has been pointed out below that there are various views of the earth system, of humans and the relationship between the two. Here we would like to clarify the difference between the view in this book and others previously proposed. Modern views of the earth system and humans could be divided into human-oriented views (anthropocentrism) and nature-oriented ones (naturecentrism). Recently, a view unifying these two views has been proposed.
