Abstract

We have studied pictures obtained under different shooting and viewing conditions and many test images made for various production purposes, including the effective setting of objects to study the relationship between picture characteristics and the psychological effects they produce. For the purpose of this report, we chose to focus on the two key psychological factors of ease of viewing and sense of presence. Poor ease of viewing of scenes is regarded as one of the causative factors of visual fatigue. We also looked at the characteristic spatiotemporal distribution of parallax in 3-D images. While many earlier studies had focused on the accurate extraction of local parallax, we paid attention to the characteristics of screen parallax as a whole.

We then investigated the correlations between these psychological factors and the characteristics of parallax distribution in order to understand what constituted hard and easy images to watch with the goal of creating a new 3-D HDTV system that would minimize visual fatigue.
