Abstract

Ductile cast iron (it is also called spheroidal graphite cast iron or nodular cast iron) was invented by H. Morrogh in England in 1947 and by A. P. Gagnebin et al. in America in 1948, over a half-century ago. Since then, ductile cast iron has been applied widely as a main industrial material in place of high-grade cast iron with strength of 300 MPa and cast steel. Production continues to increase annually. However, few research reports have compared their fracture characteristics with those for other structural materials. Although there is Bradley’s summarized report [1], because cast iron is generally assumed as brittle compared to steels, there are only few applications to structural elements where fracture toughness becomes major concern. In addition, various new materials are appearing in recent years and therefore less interest is attracted by cast iron, which is generally believed to be an old material.
