Abstract

The main subject for the research and development on ceramics is how to overcome their brittleness. Hence research work on strength and toughness has been carried out extensively; the results have been summarized in many review papers in the literature [14]. However, the history of ceramics research is still too short compared to that for metallic materials; until recently, there has been no discussion on improvement of brittleness on a common basis. A toughness evaluation method itself has not been standardized yet.
