Regulated expression of non-polymorphic gp49 molecules on mouse natural killer cells

  • Conference paper
Activating and Inhibitory Immunoglobulin-like Receptors

Summary

Murine natural killer (NK) cells express inhibitory receptors belonging to the C-type lectin-like (Ly-49, CD94/NKG2) and Ig-superfamily related (gp49) receptors. The murine gp49B receptor displays structural homology with human killer inhibitory receptors (KIR) and other Ig-like receptors. By contrast to most of these receptors, gp49 molecules are not expressed by resting NK cells but are expressed when NK cells are activated in vitro. Importantly, gp49 molecules are also upregulated in the context of murine cytomegalovirus infection. Furthermore, the gp49 molecules do not appear to display allelic polymorphism, suggesting a unique functional role for gp49 molecules in regulating NK cells long after initial stimuli.
