Zusammenfassung
Kinder spielen in afrikanischen Gesellschaften eine wichtige soziale, politische und auch ökonomische Rolle. Sie sind Symbole für den Fortbestand und die Lebenskraft der Gemeinschaft und werden als Garanten für die Ahnenwerdung ihrer Vorfahren gesehen. Vor allem in agrarbetonten Gesellschaften gelten sie als geschätzter Reichtum. Ihnen werden altersentsprechend bestimmte Rollen in der Gesellschaft zugewiesen, die zumeist geschlechtsspezifisch ausgerichtet sind und sie so auf das Erwachsenendasein vorbereiten sollen. Die Art und Weise wie dies geschieht, ist von Gesellschaft zu Gesellschaft verschieden, ein gemeinsames Kriterium war allerdings für lange Zeit, dass das Aufziehen von Kindern als eine Aufgabe der ganzen Gemeinschaft verstanden wurde.
