Zusammenfassung
Um die Zeit, als an der Ostküste des nordamerikanischen Kontinents die ersten englischen Kolonien entstanden, lebten die Lakota in weitgestreuten Dörfern in den Wäldern Minnesotas. Ihre Frauen durchstreiften in ihren Kanus ihre heimatlichen Flüsse und Seen auf der Suche nach wildem Reis und bauten am Rande ihrer Ansiedelungen auf kleinen Feldern Mais an, während die Männer Hirsche und andere Tiere des Waldes zum Lebensunterhalt beisteuerten. Gelegentlich jagten sie auch einmal erfolgreich einen Büffel. Von Zeit zu Zeit wurde mit anderen indianischen Gruppen Handel getrieben.
