Das dielektrische Verhalten eines Festkörpers wird durch seine Dielektrizitätskonstante ε bestimmt. Sie verknüpft gemäß der Beziehung
die elektrische Feldstärke \( \overrightarrow \varepsilon \) mit der elektrischen Flußdichte \( \overrightarrow D \). Bei einem Festkörper ist die Dielektrizitätskonstante im allgemeinen Fall ein symmetrischer Tensor zweiter Stufe; nur für kubische Kristalle, mit denen wir uns hier allein beschäftigen, ist dieser Tensor zu einem Skalar entartet. Es interessiert vor allem, wie die Dielektrizitätskonstante von der Frequenz eines in ihm erzeugten elektrischen Wechselfeldes abhängt. Diese Beziehung ist für das Verständnis der optischen Eigenschaften der Festkörper von besonderer Bedeutung.
