Die im vorhergehenden Kapitel untersuchte Approximation mit absoluter Gütegarantie kommt immer dann sehr nah an den Wert einer optimalen Lösung, wenn die Werte der Lösungen sehr groß sind. Eine konstante absolute Abweichung von z.B. 10 bei einem optimalen Wert von 1000000 fällt kaum noch „ins Gewicht“. Wie wir aber zum Ende des Kapitels gesehen hatten, kann man bei vielen Problemen durch einen vergleichsweise einfachen Multiplikationstrick die Lücke zwischen optimaler und zweitbester Lösung beinahe beliebig groß machen und damit zeigen, daß man das Problem nicht gut im Rahmen einer absoluten Gütegarantie approximieren kann. Deswegen wenden wir uns nun der „prozentualen“, bzw. korrekter, der relativen Güte zu, bei der man sich in Abhängigkeit von den Werten der Lösungen mit einer Abweichung von z.B. maximal 10% zufrieden gibt. Dies entspricht der alltäglichen Redewendung „Ein, zwei Prozent Abweichung sind tolerierbar“.
