Metal removal processes (Zerspanvorgänge)

Abstract

Metal removal processes use a metal cutting tool that moves relative to the workpiece, and removes metal chips from it. Efficient metal removal is only possible, if the tool has the optimum rake and clearance (or relief) angles as shown for a lathe tool in Fig 7.10. The material which lies ahead of the tool is sheared continuously. Chips are formed which become hard and brittle, and curl away from the tool. Four basic types of chips can be identified
