Materials which cannot be soldered or welded can be bonded by the use of adhesives. This is usually better than using metal fasteners. Adhesives are used to bond metals to nonmetallic materials like plastics, glass, wood, porcelain, etc., or where welding is detrimental to the properties of the material. It is particularly useful with very thin materials, which cannot be joined by welding or with the help of metal fasteners. Adhesive bonding offers great advantages in aircraft construction, because by using the method of sandwich construction, very light components with excellent stiffness properties can be produced
