While capitalism has doubtlessly improved countless lives and resulted in enormous progress in the twentieth century, several concerns have been raised in the past 20 years. These concerns cast doubt on whether the current system of global capitalism - which has been prevalent since the fall of communism - is by itself sustainable and able to continue delivering benefits into the future. Many worry that the phase of corporate expansion we just experienced has led to environmental damage and economic imbalance (see e.g. Hart and Christensen (2002)), and challenge capitalism to evolve in some way such that the benefits can be shared more equitably and reaped without damaging the environment.
