Abstract

Mergers and acquisitions matter. For entire economies, countries, industries as well as firms. The number of mergers and acquisitions strongly increased during the 90s and peaked in 1998 Since 1998, the number and the volume of mergers and acquisitions have declined. But still, the number of deals is higher than the peak of the last merger wave in the seventies.
