Der japanische Markt ist groß, zukunftsorientiert, und seine Konsumenten sind wohlhabend und anspruchsvoll. Mit einem BIP von 4.571 Mrd. US-Dollar im Jahre 2005 zählt Japan mit Abstand zur größten Volkswirtschaft Asiens. Japan gebührt eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit in den Strategien westlicher Unternehmen, die dieses wirtschaftliche Schwergewicht in den letzten Jahren aufgrund der oft blinden Begeisterung für den chinesischen Markt vernachlässigten. Der Anteil Japans am Weltkonsum beträgt etwa 20 Prozent, und dies bei einer Bevölkerungsgröße, die gerade einmal einem Zehntel der chinesischen Bevölkerungszahl entspricht. Japan wird, auch wenn China und Indien in den nächsten Jahren weiter an Bedeutung gewinnen, weiterhin in der Spitzenliga der Weltwirtschaft bleiben. Japanische Märkte, japanische Technologie und nicht zuletzt japanische Produkt- und Fertigungstechnologie setzen Maßstäbe im internationalen Geschäft und dominieren zu einem nicht geringen Teil die aufstrebenden Märkte in Asien-Pazifik.
