Bereits Bertheim bemerkt in den 30er Jahren bei der Analyse der Motive für den Erwerb eigener Aktien, 1 „daß es nicht einfach, häufig sogar unmöglich ist, die Gründe [für Aktienrückkäufe] einwandfrei festzustellen; darür spielen sich die Vorgänge zu sehr unter dem Ausschluß der Öffentlichkeit ab.“ (Bertheim (1933), S. 5). Weitere 70 Jahre später schlussfolgern Chou/Lin (2003), S. 12: „It is difficult to identify the real reason why firms repurchase their stock“.
