Die veränderten Wettbewerbsbedingungen (wie z. B. die zunehmende Internationalisierung und die Verkürzung von Produktlebenszyklen) haben in den vergangenen Jahren dazu geführt, dass sich immer mehr Unternehmen auf ihre Kernkompetenzen konzentriert haben, um nachhaltige Wettbewerbsvorteile entwickeln zu können. Hierzu wurden früher selbst erbrachte Wertschöpfungsbestandteile outgesourct, so dass mehr und mehr über den Markt bezogen wurde. Da sich diese Tendenz jedoch nicht nur auf einzelnen Wertschöpfungsstufen beobachten lässt, hat die Kernkompetenz/Outsourcing-Entwicklung in vielen Märkten zu komplexeren und deutlich verlängerten Wertschöpfungsketten geführt. Nicht zuletzt aus diesem Grund stellen heute Unternehmen immer deutlicher fest, dass mit der Reduktion der eigenen Wertschöpfungskette auch Probleme verbunden sein können: So steigt der Koordinationsbedarf- und aufwand in der Supply Chain aufgrund der Tatsache, dass immer mehr Unternehmen an der Wertschöpfung beteiligt sind, deutlich an.
