Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Hypothese dass die Existenz eines Umweltmanagementsystems (UMS) in Unternehmen einen positiven Einfluss auf die Durchführung von Umweltinnovationen hat. Umweltinnovationen werden dabei als die Teilmenge der Innovationen in einer Volkswirtschaft verstanden, welche eine Reduktion der von Produkten oder Prozessen ausgehenden Umweltbelastung zur Folge haben. Türpitz et al. (2004) weisen darauf hin, dass diese Eingrenzung der Richtung des durch die Innovation erzeugten technischen Fortschritts ein wesentliches Definitionskriterium ist für Umweltinnovationen ist. Rennings (2000) weist weiterhin auf das Merkmal der Doppelexternalität von Umweltinnovationen hin, der ebenfalls zur Abgrenzung herangezogen werden kann. Hiermit ist gemeint, dass die Durchführung von Umweltinnovationen neben den Innovationen generell zugeschriebenen positiven Externalitäten aus Spillover-Effekten zusätzlich die Reduktion von externen Umweltkosten als negativer Externalität zur Folge hat (solange Umweltbelastungen mit externen Kosten verbunden sind). Derart eingegrenzt können Umweltinnovationen grundsätzlich weiterhin gemäss des Oslo-Manuals (OECD/Eurostat 1997) in Produktinnovationen (umweltgerechte Produktgestaltung) und Prozessinnovationen (integrierte Umweltschutztechnologien) unterschieden werden (vgl. auch Türpitz et al. 2004; Ziegler & Rennings 2004; Fichter 2005). Eine Reihe von empirischen Studien hat die Determinanten von Umweltinnovationen auf betrieblicher Ebene und auf der Ebene aggregierter Industrien untersucht. Diese werden im Folgenden kurz dargestellt.
