Markowitz (1952) entwickelte vor über fünfzig Jahren ein normatives Modell zur Portfolioselektion. Damit löste er den bis dahin eher oberflächlichen Umgang mit Portfoliorisiken („Don’t put all your eggs in one basket“) ab.1 Allerdings wurde das Markowitz-Modell aufgrund der hohen Informations- und Datenverarbeitungsanforderungen erst mit der rasanten Entwicklung der Informations- und Datenbeschaffungstechnologie sowohl für institutionelle als auch für private Investoren praktikabel.
