Emotionen stellen im Hinblick auf die menschliche Entwicklungsgeschichte einen essentiellen Bestandteil dar. „We may be affected in an emotional way by almost any aspect of the physical environment ….“18 Emotionen bilden dabei nicht nur die Motivationsund Handlungsgrundlage von Individuen, sondern liefern gleichzeitig auch wichtige Erklärungsansätze in Bezug auf die Struktur und Ausgestaltung entsprechenden Verhaltens. Dies bedeutet, dass sowohl individuelle Handlungsprozesse als auch spezifische Einstellungen, Haltungen und Sichtweisen von Individuen durch ihr emotionales Erleben determiniert bzw. mit beeinflusst werden. Hieraus kann abgleitet werden, dass Emotionen gerade innerhalb sozialer Interaktion eine wichtige strukturierende Variable darstellen. Berücksichtigt man zudem, dass Emotionen nicht nur Verhalten strukturieren, sondern auch gleichermaßen limitieren, indem sie etwa bestimmte Parameter individuellen Verhaltens wie die Problemlösefähigkeit, die Kreativität, das Denkvermögen etc. beeinflussen, dann wird deutlich, welche Bedeutung ihnen gerade in der Arbeitswelt sowie innerhalb von Führungsprozessen zukommt.
