Die Begriffe „Unternehmenswachstum“ und „Unternehmensentwicklung“ werden in der Literatur sehr unterschiedlich interpretiert. Im Allgemeinen versteht man unter beiden Konzepten eine zeitraumbezogene und keine zeitpunktbezogene Variable. Wachstum ist ein Prozess, Größe, ein Zustand, und um zu wachsen bedarf es einer positiven Entwicklung der Unternehmensgröße. Negative oder konstante Entwicklungsrichtungen sind ausgeschlossen (vgl. Hinterhuber 2004). Eine deutliche und präzise Unterscheidung findet sich bei (1970), der Unternehmensentwicklung als Unternehmenswachstum im weiteren Sinne definiert. Unternehmenswachstum im engeren Sinne ist demnach die Änderung der zu Quantifizierung herangezogenen, relevanten Unternehmensgröße im Zeitablauf (z.B. Veränderungen des Umsatz, der Beschäftigtenzahl). Unternehmensentwicklung wird als Änderung der gesamten Unternehmung im Zeitablauf interpretiert und bezieht sich neben rein quantitativen Änderungen auch auf qualitative Veränderungen wie strategische Neuorientierungen, Reorganisationen aller Art, den neuen Einsatz von Führungskräften, Eigentüm erwechsel oder anderen betrieblichen Lernprozessen.
