Auf die Frage was die Universität für die Gesellschaft leistet bzw. welche Verantwortung sie als Institution trägt, gibt es keine klare Antwort. Zwar herrscht Einigkeit darüber, dass die Universität eine zentrale Rolle in der Wissensgesellschaft1 spielt, was diese Rolle aber ausmachen soll, ist so vielfältig wie umstritten. Die Bandbreite der Anforderungen an die Universität reicht von ökonomischen und politischen über pädagogische und wissenschaftliche bis hin zu sozialen und kulturellen Aufgaben. Die Universität soll Wissen produzieren und vermitteln, Fachkräfte qualifizieren, ein Motor der Innovation sein, zur Beschäftigungsfähigkeit führen, zur gesellschaftlichen Integration beitragen und auf aktive Teilnahme an der Zivilgesellschaft vorbereiten. Sie soll gleichzeitig für gesellschaftliche Transformation und Reproduktion mitverantwortlich sein und für die Selektion und Formation von Eliten sowie für den sozialen Aufstieg immer größerer Bevölkerungsgruppen zuständig sein. Nicht zuletzt gilt sie als Instanz der sekundären Sozialisierung, die an der Generierung und Vermittlung von Werten beteiligt ist. Tatsächlich kommt sie, je nach historischer, räumlicher und institutioneller Besonderheit unterschiedlich betont, verschiedenen normativen Aufforderungen nach: Universitäten sind in jede Art sozialer und ökonomischer Aktivität der heutigen Gesellschaft eingebunden (Enders/Fulton 2002, 2). In diesem Artikel soll einem Aspekt nachgegangen werden, dem in der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion eher wenig Beachtung geschenkt wird: der Rolle der Universität bei der Konstruktion europäischer Identität.
Der Begriff der Wissensgesellschaft bezeichnet post-industrielle Gesellschaften, in denen nicht (mehr) Eigentum und Arbeit, sondern Wissen die wichtigste Ressource darstellt. Seit dem Lissabon-Gipfel (2000) wird auf allen europäischen Gipfeln betont, dass die Bildung einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum Erfolg der „Europäischen Wissensgesellschaft“ leisten soll.
