Die Pfadforschung ist für die vorliegende Arbeit von großer Bedeutung, da sie den Begriff der Selbstverstärkung und ein Prozessverständnis einführt. Ihren Ursprung nahm die Pfadforschung in einer wirtschaftshistorischen Debatte im angelsächsischen Sprachraum (vgl. David 1985). Durch verschiedenste Weiterentwicklungen der ursprünglichen Veröffentlichung liegt jedoch keine einheitliche Theorie vor, so dass mit ‚Pfadforschung’ alle Ansätze mit Pfadbezug gemeint sind.
